Dispatches: Is Torture a Good Idea?
Channel 4 presentation, RT 49:06. Clive Stafford Smith is a British lawyer who has represented American prisoners on Death Row and, more recently, detainees in Guantanamo Bay. In this programme, he reveals the abuses suffered by Guantanamo detainees and talks to experts in the field of torture, including CIA and US Army veterans. The programme examines cases of false confessions extracted under torture, suggesting that torture is useless as well as being repugnant and illegal.

4:10 - "The threat today comes from religious fanatics who want to remake the world in their image, and they're prepared to commit [homicide] in order to produce that result." -- Richard Perle, "neoconservative"

I don't understand. What's your commentary? Several Islamic terrorist organizations have released communiques stating just what you quoted from the neoconservative. The general message from Islamic extremist organizations is that governments should be Islamic, and all non-Muslims as defined by them cannot be converted, but must be completely eradicated so that they can create their religious state. They often see the US as a key, if not the sole perpetrator of secular evil. Sometimes they're motivated by a desire to speed the coming of a new messiah and age, the achievement of which is connected to their terrorist acts. I might have fudged some finer details, but it is a fact that they are absolutely intolerant of the existence of dissenting viewpoints.

As for the efficacy of torture, it can work. The French were able to end a spree of urban terrorism in the city of Algiers during 1957 by resorting to suffocating blanket security measures and systematic torture in order to obtain information. This alienated the citizens of Algiers and cast doubt in the minds of French citizens on their role in the country. Islamic extremists are more unrelenting in their objectives (Algerian terrorists sought only independence), so trying to wipe them out militarily isn't feasible, and neither is appeasing them (they want all of us dead).

There's a good book called Inside Terrorism by a man named Bruce Hoffmann. It's informative and unbiased in its discussion of the history, current trends, and solutions to terrorism.

Re: Dispatches: Is Torture a Good Idea?
PNAC and the neocons want to remake the world in their image and are willing to resort to the most despicable acts (aggressive warfare, torture, secret prisons, secret wars) in pursuit of that goal. They use religion as a tool for governance. And some PNAC insiders are actually motivated by religious imperative, and don't merely use religion to manipulate others.

That's my commentary.
